Bitcoin + Toast

Toast doesn’t natively process Bitcoin. You can still add it without replacing Toast.

Toast’s current support documentation says it does not accept cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin or Ethereum. A restaurant can instead keep Toast for ordering and reporting while a separate Lightning payment layer handles the Bitcoin transaction.

1

Keep Toast as the restaurant system

Menus, checks, kitchen flow and existing card payments stay where the staff already knows them.

2

Run Bitcoin separately

A browser-based terminal such as Speed can generate a Lightning QR on a phone, tablet, laptop or desktop without dedicated Bitcoin hardware.

3

Reconcile the check

Toast supports custom non-cash/non-credit “Other Payment Options.” After an external Bitcoin payment is confirmed, a restaurant can evaluate using a custom Bitcoin tender to close and report the check.

What Toast officially says

Toast’s September 2026 support documentation states that Toast is not currently accepting cryptocurrency payments such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. Separately, Toast documents the ability to create unlimited alternative payment types that can appear on the POS and in payment reports.

Important: A custom Toast payment type does not process Bitcoin. It is a reconciliation/tender label for a payment handled elsewhere. Test the workflow, refunds, tips, reporting and accounting before using it in production.

A practical restaurant workflow

  1. Ring the order in Toast normally.
  2. Enter the amount in the separate Bitcoin terminal.
  3. Customer scans the Lightning QR and pays.
  4. Wait for confirmed payment.
  5. Apply the restaurant’s configured Bitcoin/alternative tender in Toast to close the check.
  6. Reconcile Toast reporting against the Bitcoin processor’s transaction report.

Why Speed is relevant

Speed Terminal is browser-based, supports Bitcoin Lightning, can run on existing web-connected devices and supports custom order fields. That makes it a candidate for restaurants that want to test Bitcoin beside Toast rather than migrate away from Toast.
